What the AHA BLS Renewal Course Covers

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for Adults, Children and Infants

The AHA BLS course covers high-performance CPR technique for all age groups. You practice proper hand placement, compression depth of at least 2 inches for adults, rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute, full chest recoil between compressions, and minimizing interruptions to blood flow. Infant and child-specific compression technique is covered separately with the correct depth and two-finger placement method for infants.

AED Use and Deployment

Hands-on AED training uses trainer devices that simulate a real cardiac arrest response. You practice recognizing a shockable rhythm, pad placement for adult and pediatric patients, operating through the full shock cycle, and resuming high-quality chest compressions immediately after defibrillation. Proper AED use is a core component of the AHA BLS certification and is tested in the skills assessment.

Bag Valve Mask Ventilation

Healthcare providers practicing BLS renewal work through bag valve mask technique covering proper mask seal, ventilation rate, tidal volume, and coordination with chest compressions. Both 1-rescuer and 2-rescuer ventilation scenarios are practiced. This skill is specific to the BLS Healthcare Provider certification and is required for clinical settings.


2-Rescuer CPR and Team Response

AHA BLS places significant emphasis on team-based cardiac arrest response. The renewal course includes 2-rescuer CPR scenarios covering compressor and ventilator roles, smooth role transitions, clear verbal communication during resuscitation, and maintaining uninterrupted high-quality compressions during handoffs.


Foreign Body Airway Obstruction Relief

Choking relief for adults, children, and infants is a required component of AHA BLS. The course covers back blows and abdominal thrusts for responsive choking victims and the transition to CPR when a choking victim becomes unresponsive. Age-specific technique differences are practiced hands-on.

Yes. There is no penalty for a lapsed certification and no extended course required. You attend the same AHA BLS class and receive a new 2-year card. Your employer may have their own internal policy regarding a gap in coverage, but the training and certification process is identical regardless of whether your card expired yesterday or two years ago.

Yes. Because we teach the full AHA BLS course to every student, new certifications and renewals run in the same class. The content works equally well for first-time students and experienced professionals refreshing their skills.

Our instructors work with every student individually to ensure they succeed. If your technique needs additional work, they coach you through it and give you more practice time. You can reattempt the skills assessment until you demonstrate competency. If additional practice time beyond the class is needed, you can attend a subsequent class at no additional charge.
